Acadian Golf Tournament cancelled for 2020

WELLINGTON – April 29, 2020 – The 2020 edition of the Acadian Golf Tournament, scheduled for Aug. 30 at Mill River Golf Course, has been cancelled.

Since restrictions on public gatherings were put in place in mid-March, organizers had been deliberating whether or not to continue with this annual event, which is a fundraiser for the PEI Regional Committee of Les Jeux de l’Acadie.

« With the uncertainty caused by the pandemic and its impact on the small businesses that sponsor our Golf Tournament, we thought it wise to cancel the tournament for this summer, » says Julie Gilman, president of the Regional Committee.

The Acadian and Francophone Chamber of Commerce of PEI (CCAFLIPE), which has been a partner of the tournament for the past several years, agrees with the reasoning behind this decision. « In this time of financial difficulty, it would not be very appropriate to knock on the doors of small businesses to ask for sponsorships, » said Chamber spokesperson Pierre Gallant.

However, both partners reassure golfers that the Acadian Golf Tournament will be back in 2021.

“We will certainly be open to continuing our partnership with you when the next tournament will be organized,” confirmed Alfred Arsenault, executive director of the Évangéline-Central Credit Union, the event’s main sponsor.
