WELLINGTON – Jan. 11, 2021 – Anyone who does accounting, handles employee payroll and manages small businesses is invited to participate in two workshops delivered in French by Louis Arsenault of Matt’s Tax, Bookkeeping & Accounting of Harmony Road on Wednesday, Feb. 17.

The first workshop, at 11 a.m., will show participants how to prepare paper and online versions of the newly revised T4 and T4A forms. The second workshop, at 1 p.m., will show participants how to prepare records of employment. Participants will be able to ask questions throughout the presentations. It is anticipated that each workshop will last about one hour. People have the option of attending only one of the workshops or both.

The Acadian and Francophone Chamber of Commerce of PEI (CCAFLIPE) and the Wellington Rural Action Centre (RAC) are jointly organizing these workshops. CCAFLIPE events coordinator Raymond J. Arsenault noted that attempts will be made to deliver the workshops in person in the RAC meeting room at 48 Mill Road, Wellington, if the number of registrants remains small. There is also the option of using a larger meeting room in the Village of Wellington if the number of participants warrants. A light meal will be provided. If public gatherings are not permitted due to the pandemic at that time, the workshops will be delivered via Zoom.

T4 AND T4A WORKSHOP

The T4 form is a summary of employment income for the year and the deductions that were taken. Employers must give this form to their employees at the end of the year so that they can use the information to complete their tax forms. The T4A form is a statement of income from pensions, retirement funds, annuities or other sources.

“In the first workshop, we will cover the different types of income and deductions that must be reported on the T4, which is given to employees, and on the T4 Summary, which is given to the federal government. We will show participants how to calculate and report this information,” explains the trainer. « We will then review the T4A, outlining the circumstances that require this form to be prepared. We will then explain how to complete it. We will also present examples of these completed forms.”

RECORD OF EMPLOYMENT WORKSHOP

A record of employment (ROE) provides information on employment history. It is the most important document for the employee making an employment insurance (EI) claim. Service Canada uses the information on the ROE to determine whether a person is eligible for EI benefits, how much they are entitled to receive, and how long they will receive benefits. The ROE is also used to ensure that EI funds are not misused and that benefits are not paid out in error.

“We will be looking at all the information that needs to be included on the ROE and how to report it on the form. Participants will learn under which circumstances this form should be provided to the employee,” said Arsenault.

TRAINER

After working for almost 30 years in another trade, Arsenault completed his accounting technology course at Holland College in 2008. He first worked as an accountant in the private sector.

He eventually decided to start his own business in 2010. Today, he handles the accounting for a number of companies. Each year he is responsible for completing hundreds of T1 tax returns for both the public and private sectors, some of which are very simple and some of which are very complicated. He also prepares T2 income tax returns for corporations and handles year-end work for other corporations. He also manages a fully automated payroll service used by many businesses.
