Calling for entries for 16th Acadian Golf Tournament at Mill River

Fundraiser a little earlier than usual

WOODSTOCK – June 17, 2022 – Amateur and experienced golfers alike will have plenty of chances to win prizes of all kinds during the 16th PEI Acadian Golf Tournament at Mill River Golf Course in Woodstock, including prizes from random draws and some competitive prizes. Registration is now officially open!

« A few years ago, during the 2019 Congrès mondial acadien, we held our friendly tournament in mid-August, rather than the usual mid-September. People really enjoyed playing in the middle of summer. So we decided to give it another try by holding our 2022 tournament on Sunday, Aug. 21, at 1 p.m., » explains coordinator Jeannette Gallant. « The event is again a fundraiser organized mainly to help defray the expenses of our Island youth delegation’s participation in the next Jeux de l’Acadie Finals in Memramcook, NB, in early summer 2023. If there are any surpluses, we will use them for other annual programming expenses incurred by the PEI Regional Committee of Les Jeux de l’Acadie. »

The Acadian and Francophone Chamber of Commerce of PEI, a partner in the organization of the sporting event since 2012, hopes the tournament will generate a healthy profit of between $7,000 and $7,500 as usual, or even more. « We rely heavily on entrepreneurial, corporate and organizational sponsors to make the tournament a success. To lead by example, the Provincial Credit Union, Evangeline Branch, has just confirmed that it will be the major sponsor of our tournament, contributing a great amount of $1,000. We greatly appreciate the fact that our Credit Union, newly merged with other Credit Unions under the new name Provincial, continues to support this cause, » said Raymond J. Arsenault, the chamber’s event coordinator.

« We are inviting all Island businesses and organizations that have the means to support this great cause to purchase $100 hole sponsorships. We also accept prizes or gifts of any kind or healthy food and beverages or small gifts that we can offer to all our players and volunteers. »

TOURNAMENT AND CHANGES

The organizers are still aiming for about 100 golfers this year; they will be happy to welcome regular players but will also be overjoyed to accept visitors and tourists. They invite family, corporate and organizational teams and of course teams made up of groups of friends.

Players are asked to arrive no later than 12 p.m. to register, listen to tournament instructions and prepare for the 1 p.m. tee-off time.

Gallant explained that this year’s tournament will again begin shotgun styled. The game will be played in a Mulligan (or best ball) format. Each team of four will have access to two golf carts. In addition, several stations with snacks, small games or little surprises will be interspersed throughout the course.

After the tournament, there will be a brief ceremony to award competitive tournament prizes as well as prizes for various draws. And following its tradition, the Chamber of Commerce will host a special contest offering prizes to 16 golfers chosen at random since this is the 16th tournament. A cash bar service will be available.

The entry fee (including round of golf, cart, balls, snacks, beverages and prizes) will still be $100 per person so $400 per team of four. All those golfers need to bring is their own clubs.
