More than $8,000 in prizes to be won

WELLINGTON, PEI – Oct. 3, 2013 – As they try to win more than $8,000 in cash, gift certificates and merchandise of all kinds during a Let’s Make a Deal games night Friday, Oct. 18, at 8 p.m. at Wellington Legion, contestants and spectators will also get a chance to share a bit of their own cash with less fortunate citizens from the Summerside and surrounding areas.

In fact, this fun, bilingual game show has been transformed, in its second year, into a fundraiser for the Summerside Salvation Army Food Bank.

« As everyone knows, times are getting harder and harder for some sectors of our communities; a record number of parents have no choice but to seek a portion of their groceries from the Food Bank because they simply don’t have the means to support their family, » says Angèle Arsenault, president of the Conseil de développement coopératif de l’Î.-P.-É. (francophone co-op council), the organization that staged the game in 2012.

« Last year, our show had been limited to co-ops on the occasion of International Co-op Year. It attracted 175 people, » adds Arsenault. « But this time around, we decided to open it up to the entrepreneurial and community sectors as well to encourage an even greater participation so that more money would be contributed to this very worthy cause. When they arrive, people will simply be invited to drop a donation in the amount of their choice into the donation box. »

This year’s games night will take place during Co-op and Small Business Weeks. Joining the co-op council in the organization of this event this year are the Acadian and Francophone Chamber of Commerce of PEI, the Evangeline School-Community Centre, Évangéline-Central Credit Union, Wellington Co-op, The Co-operators (Mike Bradley Insurance Services Ltd.), Wellington Rural Action Centre and RDÉE Prince Edward Island.

EVENING AND GAMES

Well-known local personality Raymond J. Arsenault will once again handle hosting duties while Roger « Co-op » Arsenault will return as the announcer.

Organizers are planning 12 major games as well as a number of smaller side games. They’ve come up with a series of games inspired by those seen on TV shows like The Price Is Right, Who Wants To Be a Millionaire, Let’s Make a Deal and Deal or No Deal. Others will look like a combination of several games.
This year, businesses, co-ops and organizations were invited to sponsor the evening. Audiences will therefore get to hear « commercials » from the main sponsors. Contestants will also get to answer trivia questions about these sponsors.

When arriving at the show, people wishing to become contestants will be required to write their name and phone number on a piece of paper. Names will be randomly drawn to select participants. Contestants will then get a chance to win high-quality prizes: household appliances, electronic products, tools, food, clothing and a quantity of surprises. People can also expect a few booby prizes or zonks, as they are called in the modern version of the TV game show.

During the evening, the co-op council will also present its Co-op Order of Merit Award to a deserving co-operator.

A bar service will be available so the evening is opened to adults only.
