WELLINGTON – Aug. 28, 2014 – All tourism operators, municipal representatives, economic development officers and government officials from the Evangeline and surrounding areas are invited to a free information session about training programs offered by the Bonavista Institute for Cultural Tourism (BICT) Tuesday, Sept. 16, at 9 a.m. at the Wellington Rural Action Centre.
Program coordinator Mary Byrne will provide an overview of the Newfoundland institute’s programs, which are offered both in class or on-line. Among the featured programs are:
- The Role of Municipalities in Tourism Planning and Development (online)
- Building Place – Planning and Developing a Creative Cultural Destination
- Profitable Partnerships – Maximizing Cultural Tourism Opportunities
- The Business of Food (online)
- Culinary Tourism and the Arts.
The BICT, located on the Bonavista Peninsula in Newfoundland and Labrador, was established to assist tourism operators and cultural providers in delivering world-class cultural experiences to visitors to Atlantic Canada. It is a leading-edge centre for professional development in the cultural tourism sector in Atlantic Canada.
Byrne will also speak about available subsidies that can cover up to 50 per cent of eligible expenses (tuition, accommodation, transportation and meals), up to a maximum payment of $1,500, for qualified participants. Government officials are not eligible.

The session is delivered in collaboration with both the Wellington Rural Action Centre and its partner, the Acadian and Francophone Chamber of Commerce of PEI. Information sessions are also being held at the Rural Action Centres in Alberton, Central Bedeque and Souris.
