Human Values class explores workings of a food bank

Delivers $2,119 in food to Tyne Valley

TYNE VALLEY – Oct. 30, 2024 – The 13 students from Evangeline School’s Human Values class recently underwent a great life experience while learning to express compassion for those who are less fortunate. In collaboration with several community partners, Claudine Blaquière’s class first organized a school food drive Oct. 15-24; each class in the school (1st to 12th) was invited to collect non-perishable foods for the chance to win a $100 prize donated by the Provincial Credit Union (Évangéline branch). The prize was earned and awarded to the Grade 11 class. The Human Values students then headed to the West Prince Caring Cupboard food bank (Tyne Valley branch) to deliver the 15 heavy boxes filled with groceries. Food bank co-coordinator Verna Barlow weighed each box and officially estimated its value at $2,119. She then instructed the high-school students to divide the food by expiry date (year). The youth then set to work sorting all their boxes, as well as the $720 in groceries from the community food drive that the Wellington Co-op had just delivered. The Caring Cupboard volunteers then explained their storage method by food type and expiry year. Barlow sincerely thanked the class for their fantastic work and assured them that their contributions would help many families who are in dire need of assistance, especially in these difficult economic times and at this cold time of year.
