“Les Hackeux” capture championship of 13th Annual Acadian Golf Tournament

Event raises more than $7,900 for Acadian Games

NEW GLASGOW – Sept. 10, 2018 – No big surprise, the lucky and skillful foursome “Les Hackeux”, made up of Ghislain Bernard, Nicholas Gallant, Jamie Caissie and Marcel Landry, claimed the championship of the 13th annual Acadian Golf Tournament with its respectful score of 58 Sunday, Sept. 9, at Glasgow Hills Golf Club in New Glasgow. This same team, which took a little break last year, had previously earned the tournament championship several years in a row, albeit when the team was called “OMD Construction and Consulting.”

The George Trainor team (made up of Debbie Cormier, Steven Miller, Brad Dunn and Nick Dunn) took second place with its score of 60 while “Les gars à John” team (made up of John, Patrick, Michael and Nick Arsenault) finished third with a score of 61.

Even though these three teams and a number of golfers won all kinds of prizes during the tournament, the real winners of the day will be the youth who will be able to participate in the 2019 Finals of Les Jeux de l’Acadie in Grand Falls, N.-B., thanks in part to funds raised during the event. The tournament raised a record profit of $7,900. For the 13th year in a row, the Evangeline-Central Credit Union was the sporting event’s main sponsor, but a number of other businesses and organizations sponsored holes and prize.

Tournament organizers – the PEI Regional Committee of Les Jeux de l’Acadie and the Acadian and Francophone Chamber of Commerce of PEI – are extremely pleased with the results of this year’s event, in spite of the cool temperatures the golfers had to contend with.

Ninety-one golfers participated in this year’s tournament as organizers tried to disassociate the number 13 (the 13th edition of the tourney) with bad luck. They even offered games and prizes related to this supposedly ominous number (13 special prizes, umbrellas opened indoors, black cats, etc.)

The other prizes (worth several thousand dollars) that were handed out at the event’s supper were:

• Black cat prize for wisdom: Eddie Gallant
